1883-O Morgan $1 NGC MS65
Morgan Silver Dollar coins were the workhorse of commerce in the American West. These large, heavy, 90% silver coins each contained over ¾ of a Troy Ounce of pure silver.
These coins were a by-product of the Bland-Allison Coinage Act of 1878. This Act reestablished the silver dollar coin as the largest silver coin struck by the United States Mint.
These coins were struck in 1878 and annually through 1904. After a hiatus of 17 years, the coins were once again struck in 1921, due to a shortage of silver dollar coins.
The coins were designed on both sides, by George T. Morgan. Morgan served as the Assistant Chief Engraver of the United States Mint after emigrating from Great Britain.
Morgan designed the obverse to depict a mature-looking depiction of an allegorical Miss Liberty. She faces to the left and she wears a slave cap on her head. She also wears a crown of American agricultural products, such as cotton and wheat, with a headband upon which the word “LIBERTY,” in inscribed.
On the upper periphery is the motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the date of minting adorns the lower periphery of the obverse. Between the Motto and the Date are thirteen six-pointed stars – 7 on the left side, six on the right.
The reverse depicts an American Eagle, facing left, with its wings outstretched and raised upward. Between the upraised wings is the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The eagle is centered within an olive wreath, and it holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch within the other.
On the upper periphery is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” with the denomination “ONE DOLLAR,” at the lower periphery.
This coin was dated 1883, and it was struck by the New Orleans mint, so it bears an “O” mintmark. The New Orleans Mint struck a fair number of coins that year – 8, 725,000 silver dollar coins in total.
This coin is graded as MS65 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the three most popular and desirable grading services in existence. Coins graded as “MS65” or higher are considered as investment quality coins.
