The inclusion of this motto in our currency was prompted by Reverend Mark R. Watkinson from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania, during a time of heightened religious sentiments among the populace due to the uncertainties and horrors of the Civil War. Reverend Watkinson believed that acknowledging this sentiment was important. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase concurred with this idea and, exercising his discretion regarding coin inscriptions, had the motto introduced on the 2-cent piece in 1864. Originally, the motto was meant to read as "In God Our Trust," but Chase's connection to Brown University, with its motto "IN DEO SPERAMUS" (translating to "IN GOD WE HOPE"), may have influenced the final wording choice. It is believed that Secretary Chase had this in mind when making the ultimate decision regarding the motto's exact phrasing. The Coin Act of March 3, 1865, granted the Treasury the discretionary authority to add the motto to "all coins able to accommodate it," which referred to coins large enough to accommodate the inscription. The Mint interpreted this as applying to all silver coins larger than a dime, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles. It wasn't until 1908 that Congress mandated the inclusion of the motto on gold and silver coins. In 1955, Congress passed a law requiring the motto's placement on all coins.
With the exception of the year 1873, all half eagles featuring the motto prior to 1878 have limited mintages and are considered rare and expensive. The cause for this rarity can be traced back to the Civil War era. During that time, gold coins were being hoarded, and banks suspended specie payments. Hoarding resulted in a two-tiered pricing system, where those using paper currency had to pay more than those using gold. The gold coins minted were primarily utilized for international trade, banking reserves, and specific contracts that demanded payment solely in gold. The year 1873 stands out as an exception because the Treasury deposited significant quantities of old, worn-out, and outdated gold coins for re-coinage. In 1878, banks resumed specie payments, leading to a substantial increase in mintages, and a large number of half eagles entered circulation.
Collectors seek this coin both as a standalone type and within various sets. Apart from collecting by date or date and mintmark combinations, one of the more favored sets consists of a single coin from each of the seven U.S. Mints that produced half eagles. It's worth noting that half eagles are unique as they are the only coin produced at all seven U.S. Mints.
