The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was begun in 1986. The US Mint and government officials were concerned about the future success of this bullion coin program.   The 1986 coins were well-received and difficult to acquire due to the increasing demand. By the following year, 1987. There was no doubt that these coins would be popular. Part of the reason for their popularity was the fact that these coins were the American alternative to buying bullion coins from Canada, China, or South Africa.   But another reason why these coins were popular was the design of the coins was already popular. This design was used on half dollar coins between 1916 and 1947. Americans loved the allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, with a rising sun shining on her and on America.  The Mint decided not to utilize the reverse design of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and they required the then-Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, to create a different design. Mercanti looked at other US coin designs and was impressed with the Draped Bust Silver Dollar reverse on coins struck between 1798 and 1804.  Mercanti created his own heraldic eagle design that had an American eagle as its central vignette. Its wings are pointed upward, and a shield covers the eagle’s body. In one talon are arrows and in the other talon are olive branches. He arranged 13 stars above the eagle and placed a banner in the eagle’s beak. Around the periphery of the reverse were the phrases “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” at the top and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”  This coin is the second year of striking, 1987, American Silver Eagle bullion coin. It has been graded as ‘MS69,’ by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major, third-party, coin grading services worldwide. Their opinions are highly respected around the globe.
