By 1996, the American Silver Eagle bullion coin program had been underway for a decade. The coins were extremely popular both across the US and worldwide. Investors, especially, liked purchasing an American bullion coin where the quality and purity were guaranteed by the US Mint and back by the government. The design that was chosen for the silver bullion coin was a truly popular one. The Walking Liberty design was created by Adolph Weinman and was first used on the “Walking Liberty Half Dollar” series that was struck between 1916 and 1947. It was well-received then, and most collectors thought that the design was still relevant and popular when it was reinvigorated in 1986. Weinman’s design was faithfully reproduced for these Silver Eagles. The Walking Liberty design has a rendition of Miss Liberty, walking to the left. Her right hand is extended in friendship, and in her left, she cradles olive branches. A radiant sun rises behind her, and the word “LIBERTY,” adorns the top of the periphery. In the right field is “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and below Miss Liberty is the date the coin was struck. The reverse of the coin depicted a Heraldic Eagle central theme. The eagle has outstretched wings, a shield covering her chest, and arrows and an olive branch in her talons. Thirteen five-pointed stars were arranged above the eagle, and a banner bearing the words, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” was in her beak. On the upper periphery was “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and on the lower periphery was “1OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”This coin is a 1996-P American Silver Eagle, and it was graded as PROOF 69, ULTRA CAMEO,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The NGC grading service is one of the world’s most respected and readily-accepted grading services. They have authenticated, graded, and encapsulated tens of millions of coins. The grade of “Proof 69” means that this coin is one point away from perfection and the designation of “Ultra Cameo” means that this coin has excellent contrast between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices.Simply click the “Add to Cart” button now or call 1-866-827-4314 to speak to one of our highly trained numismatists, who will be very happy to assist you.
