In 1986, the United States Mint released its very first bullion coins in both gold and silver. These coins were a tremendous success both domestically and internationally. The US Mint chose a well-tested and proven design to adorn the obverse. The Mint chose to reproduce the ‘Walking Liberty’ design that was first used in 1916 through 1947. This design, created by Adolph Weinman, was the Walking Liberty half dollar design. The Walking Liberty design uses an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, walking to the left. Her right hand is extended in a friendly gesture as her left arm cradles olive branches. There is a radiant sun rising behind her. She is wearing flowing robes and has an American flag wrapped around her shoulders. On the upper periphery is the word “LIBERTY,” while the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is in the right field. The current year of striking is on the lower periphery. The reverse design was created by the Chief Engraver, John Mercanti. He may have been inspired by an early US Mint coin - the 1798 Draped Bust, Large Eagle Silver dollar design. The design was called the Heraldic Eagle design. The eagle is the central element. It has upward, outstretched wings. A shield covered its body, and it held arrows in one talon and olive branches in the other. Above the eagle, Mercanti arranged 13 five-pointed stars. The upper periphery had ”UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” across the top and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR,” across the bottom. This coin is a 2002-W American Silver Eagle, graded as “PROOF 69, ULTRA CAMEO,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The coin has the “W” mintmark, indicating that it was struck at the West Point minting facility. NGC is a major independent, third-party grading service, which is respected worldwide. The ‘Proof 69’ grade means its 1 point shy of perfection while the ‘Ultra Cameo’ designation means there is great contrast between the fields and the frosted devices.
