The American Silver Eagle bullion coin was first struck in 1986. It joined silver bullion coins from China and Canada in worldwide competition for global investors dollars.
The American Silver Eagle Program is a very popular program and both international and domestic buyers compete for these coins. They are comprised of .999 Fine Silver, and each contains One Troy Ounce of silver.
This 2008-W American Silver Eagles is a proof coin. Proof coins, unlike regular bullion coins, are struck in more limited numbers. Blanchard and Company tries to always purchase the highest grade coins available.
The design of the Proof and Uncirculated Silver Eagle bullion coins is exactly the same. The strike on each coin differs as Proof coins display exceptional detail and are generally struck at higher pressures. Additionally, the coins receive special handling while being produced at the Mint.
The American Silver Eagle utilizes the design created by Adolph Weinman and used on the 1916 to 1947 Walking Liberty half dollars. The Walking Liberty design depicts an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty. She is walking to the left. Her right hand is outstretched in friendship. Her left arm cradles a bundle of olive branches.
On the obverse, the word on the upper periphery is “LIBERTY,” On the right field is the phrase “IN God WE TRUST.” Under Miss Liberty is the date of striking on the coin.
The reverse utilizes the Heraldic Eagle design created by Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, which uses an American Eagle in the center, with outstretched wings upward. There are 13 stars arranged above the eagle and in one talon are arrows and in the other talon are olive branches. Around the upper periphery is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and on the lower periphery is “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”
The coin is a 2008-W American Silver Eagle. The ‘W’ mintmark indicates that it was minted at the West Point minting facility. It has been graded as ‘Proof 69, Ultra Cameo,’ by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
NGC is a major, third-party grading service. Its opinions of grade are well-respected worldwide. The ‘Proof 69’ grade means this coin is one point away from being perfect while the ‘Ultra Cameo’ designation means that there is great contrast between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices.
