The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was begun in 1986 in order to compete with bullion coins in South Africa, China, and Canada, among others. The worldwide success of these coins indicated that the demand for bullion coins, based on Troy Ounces, is truly worldwide. So, in 1986 the US Mint began striking these coins in both gold and silver. The silver coins were made of .999 Fine Silver, and each weighed in at One Troy Ounce. In order to insure success, especially in the United States, the Mint decided to reuse a time-tested design that was well-respected in the country. The Mint faithfully reproduced the ‘Walking Liberty’ design which was used on circulating half dollar coins between 1916 and 1947. Designed by Adolph Weinman, these coins were very popular and well-collected today. The design depicts an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, adorned in flowing robes, with an American flag about her shoulders. Her right hand is outstretched, while in her left arm she cradles olive branches. A radiant and rising sun is behind her and on the upper periphery is the word “LIBERTY.” In the open field on the right side is the phrase, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while the date of striking is displayed on the bottom of the coin. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle, as designed by Chief Engraver John Mercanti in 1986. The majestic eagle is the central vignette, while wearing a shield covering her breast. The eagle had arrows, representing war, in one talon and an olive branch, representing peace, in the other. This was meant to symbolize that Miss Liberty (representing America,) is prepared for either war or peace. The mottoes, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER - ONE DOLLAR,” adorn the upper and lower peripheries, respectively. This coin is a 2010-W American Silver Eagle. The “W” mintmark indicates it was struck at the West Point minting facility. The coin has been graded as “PR(oof) 70,” and is designated as “DCAM,” which is an abbreviation for “DEEP CAMEO.” This coin has been graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), which is one of the major third-party grading services in the world. PCGS authenticates, grades and encapsulated coins and their opinions are respected worldwide. The grade means the coin is virtually perfect and the designation means that the coin has immaculate surfaces and a gorgeous visual appeal.Simply click the “Add to Cart” button now or call 1-866-827-4314 to speak to one of our highly trained numismatists, who will be very happy to assist you.
