American Silver Eagle bullion coins made their international debut in 1986, along with their golden brethren. The coins, by 2013, were already extremely popular and in demand. The Mint seemed to sell out year after year. The designs on the obverse and reverse had not changed. The obverse utilized the extremely popular “Walking Liberty” design crafted by Adolph Weinman for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar series coined from 1916 to 1947. The design displayed Miss Liberty, walking to the left, in front of a rising sun with rays emanating from it. Her right hand is extended and outstretched in friendship. Her left arm is cradling a bundle of olive branches. The word “LIBERTY,” is on the upper periphery, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” in the right field, and the date below her.The reverse depicts an American Heraldic Eagle, as designed by John Mercanti, the Chief Engraver of the Mint at the time. The eagle has 13 stars arranged above it, and arrows and an olive branch in the talons. The mottoes, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR,” around the peripheries. This coin is graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as “Proof 70” with the designation “ULTRA CAMEO.” The coin’s grade means it is virtually PERFECT. The designation “ULTRA CAMEO,” means that the fields on the coin have bright mirrors and the device are nice and frosty. The contrast between the two makes it very attractive in appearance.
