The American Silver Eagle bullion coin program is an important program for the United States Mint. Authorized by Congress in 1985, the coins were first struck in 1986. They have been struck in Uncirculated and Proof versions annually since that time, The coins have a beautiful and very popular rendition of the Walking Liberty motif on the obverse of this coin. This Walking Liberty bullion coin copies the obverse design of the 1916 to 1947 Walking Liberty Half Dollar design by Adolph Weinman. Miss Liberty is garbed in flowing robes and has an American flag about her shoulders. The word “LIBERTY,” is above her while “IN GOD WE TRUST” is in the right field. The current year of striking is below Miss Liberty. The reverse was designed by John Mercanti, a recent Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He created an updated version of a Heraldic Eagle image. The eagle has upraised wings and a shield covering its body. Arrows in one talon and olive branches in the other for balance. Above this eagle are 13 stars arranged neatly arranged with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” on the upper periphery and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER - ONE DOLLAR,” on the lower periphery. This coin is a 2014-W American Silver Eagle in “Proof 69, Ultra Cameo.” The Proof mintage is 944,575 while the BU coins also struck at West Point has a mintage of over 44 million. So, the Proof coin is much scarcer than the Uncirculated. Proof 69 means the coin is 1 point away from perfection, while ‘Ultra Cameo’ means tremendous contrast between the fields and the devices.
