The American Silver Eagle bullion coin is one of the world’s most popular silver bullion coins. The Silver Eagles are struck in Uncirculated and Proof finishes. In 2020, the West Point Mint struck over 30 million Uncirculated coins but only 357,111 Proof coins of this date. So, you can see the Proof coins of this date and mintmark represent only 1.1% of the total coins minted – a very tiny fraction of the total mintage.
The design of both types of these Silver Eagles is exactly the same. The difference is in the appearance or the finish on the coin. The Uncirculated coins will often have a shiny or satiny appearance. But the Proof coins typically look different from their Uncirculated brethren. Proof coins usually display a mirrored field and often frosted devices so they may have a really good contrast between the fields and the devices.
These American Silver Eagles came about in 1986 because of the passage of the Liberty Coin Act in 1985 by Congress. The following year, these coins, in gold and silver, were struck at various mints. The coins were a rousing success.
The obverse design was a faithful rendition of Adolph Weinman’s ‘Walking Liberty’ design, which was first used on the “Walking Liberty” half dollar series of coins struck between 1916 and 1947.
The obverse depicted Miss Liberty, walking to the left, with her arm outstretched. She holds olive branches in her left. Her flowing robes obscure the American flag wrapped around her shoulders. A sun, with rays emanating from it, rises behind her. “LIBERTY,” adorns the upper periphery, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is in the open field to the right, and the date of striking is below.
The reverse is a Heraldic Eagle, designed by the Chief Engraver, John Mercanti. The eagle is standing upright, arrows in one talon and olive branches in the other, Around the periphery is “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” at the top and “1 OZ FINE Silver - ONE DOLLAR.”
This 2020-W American Silver Eagle was graded as ‘Proof 69, Ultra Cameo,” by the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC), NGC is one of the major, independent, third-party grading services. It is respected worldwide.
The ‘Proof 69’ grade indicates that this coin is only one point away from perfection, while the ‘Ultra Cameo’ designation means that the coin has a nice contrast between the mirrored fields and the frosted devices.
