The year, 2021, was a very important year in the world of American Silver Eagles. These silver bullion coins, which were first minted in 1986 had not changed any major details in either side of the coins since their inception. But 2021 proved to be a very interesting year. The obverse of the coin depicted Adolph Weinman’s timeless design of an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty walking towards the viewer’s left. Her right hand is extended out in a friendly gesture. Her left arm cradles some bundles of olive branches. She is garbed in flowing robes as a radiant sun rises behind her. The phrases “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the current year of striking are positioned along the periphery of the obverse. But the reverse changed dramatically from then-Chief Engraver John Mercanti’s heraldic Eagle design which was used from 1986 through March of 2021. For coin struck in April of 2021 a new reverse design was implemented.Unlike the prior design, this design utilized an image of an American Eagle landing. She was carrying an oak leaf branch in her talons as she descended. Around her, on the peripheries, were the typical mottoes one would expect, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” This new design was very well-received by collectors and investors alike. The “Flying Eagle” was a welcomed change over the Heraldic Eagle coin and, due to the effects of COVID, American Silver Eagle coins were very much in demand and in short supply. This is a 2021 American Silver Eagle, Type 2, Eagle Landing and has been graded as “MS69,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
