By the year 1995, the American Silver Eagle bullion coin program was a tremendous success. The United States Mint created a bullion coin program that would compete with the success of other international countries who led the way. The coin buying and investing worldwide audience wanted an American bullion coin and once created, the public flocked to it in droves. The American coin bullion program was, and continues to be, a tremendous success. When the program for the American Silver Eagle was created, the US Mint wisely chose a design that was already a popular and well respected design and had been for more than 70 years. The Mint chose the magnificent design created many years earlier, in 1916, by Adolph Weinman.Weinman created this design in an era when America was being prodded to enter World War I, to help our European allies, and many people wanted the United States to remain neutral. The design depicted an allegorical representation of Miss Liberty, walking to the left. In a nod to being friendly, Miss Liberty has extended her open right hand in a gesture of friendship. She also carried an armload of olive branches in her left arm. The radiant sun was rising behind her, ostensibly on the United States. Above Miss Liberty is the word, “LIBERTY,” and to the right is the phrase, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Below her, on the lower periphery is the current date of striking. The reverse was taken from a much earlier design than 1916. Chief Engraver of the US Mint, John Mercanti, created his own interpretation of a Heraldic Eagle design, somewhat similar to the Large Eagle, Draped Bust Silver Dollar design of 1798 to 1804. Mercanti’s design had the eagle as the central vignette, the wings were outstretched, and the eagle wore a shield protecting it. Like the earlier design, the eagle has a banner in its beak with “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” on it. She also has arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. Mercanti added 13 five-pointed stars in a neat arrangement above the eagle, similar to the earlier design. But unlike the prior design, there were no clouds above the stars and the phrases were partially similar. There was, as expected, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” but newly added was “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR.”This lot is for a 1995-P American Silver Eagle, graded as “PROOF 69 ULTRA CAMEO,” by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). This company, NGC, is one of the major, independent, third-party grading services. NGC has authenticated, graded, and encapsulated many millions of coins throughout its history. The “Proof 69” grade means that this coin is one point away from perfection and the “ULTRA CAMEO,” designation means that the devices are frosted, and the fields are mirrored for a beautiful appearance.
