The American Silver Eagle bullion coins are likely the most popular silver bullion coins in the world. They were first struck and sold in 1986. The Liberty Coin Act, passed by Congress in 1985 and signed by the president allowed for both gold and silver coins to be struck. The coins were struck of .999 Fine Silver and each Silver Eagle weighs One Troy Ounce of pure silver.
These Silver Eagle coins utilized the Walking Liberty design on the obverse of the coin. This design, originally created by artist Adolph Weinman in 1916 depicted Miss Liberty, in flowing robes. She walked to the left, as the radiant sun rose majestically behind her.
The word “LIBERTY,” is on the upper periphery, above Miss Liberty. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is to the right and the striking date is on the bottom periphery. In her left arm are olive branches and her right hand is outstretched. This design originally was used on the Walking Liberty half dollar coins struck between 1916 and 1947.
The reverse design was created by the then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti. He took inspiration from the 1798 to 1804 Draped Bust silver dollar coins and created a heraldic eagle design. The central image is of an American Bald Eagle with a shield on her chest. There are 13 five-pointed stars above the eagle, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” on the upper periphery, and “1 OZ FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR,” on the lower periphery.
This coin is a 1996 American Silver Eagle bullion coin that has been graded as MS69, by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). NGC is one of the major, independent, third-party grading services. The MS69 grade means that the coin is only one point away from perfection.
